Rabbi Dr Alan Kimche was born in Melbourne in 1952 and came to London with his parents in 1958, where he was educated at Avigdor Primary School and Hasmonean High School. He went on to yeshiva in Jerusalem, learning at Yeshivat Kol Torah for three years under the guidance of HaGaon R. Shlomo Zalman Auerbach zt”l, who became his lifelong mentor.
He continued his yeshiva studies at the Mir Yeshiva for a further five years under the guidance of Hagaon R. Chaim Shmulevitz zt”l. He received his first rabbinic Semicha from R. Yaakov Fink zt”l, the Av Beit Din of Haifa, and later continued his halakhic studies with Rav Yehoshua Neuwirth shlita, (author of “Shemirat Shabbat KeHilchata”) from whom he received an advanced Semicha.
In 1976 he married Via Evers from Amsterdam. Alongside bringing up their seven children, Via dedicated herself to building what has become the largest modern orthodox community in the UK. With her degree in psychology and education she has counseled hundreds of women and is a sought-after international speaker. She is an experienced high school teacher, kallah teacher, childbirth educator and parenting expert, and she has also trained as a life coach.
After his marriage, Rabbi Kimche continued for a further two years in the Kollel of the Mir Yeshiva and then from 1980-1984 taught in Darche Noam Yeshiva (Shappels) and at Michalala College for Women. He later gained a Ph.D in Philosophy & Jewish Law from London University, with his thesis on “Kavod Habriyot: Human Dignity in Talmudic Law”.
In 1984 he came to London and began two new initiatives. One was the very successful adult education Da’at programme, involving several weekly lunch-time shiurim for businessmen and women in the City and West End of London.The other was a new minyan in Hendon, North West London.
Rabbi Kimche was instrumental in building Ner Yisrael into one of the most successful Modern Orthodox communities in Europe. As a successful Communal Rabbi, he developed innovative education programs for the wider Jewish community, and was responsible for establishing the N.W. London Eruv. He launched the first Lunch & Learn program in London, organizing shiurim in multiple offices for 15 years, and was involved in educational outreach projects including Jewish Continuity and the Encounter Conferences.
Rabbi Kimche is a sought-after posek, answering personal and halakhic questions with wisdom and sensitivity. He is a popular and engaging speaker on a wide range of topics, specializing in Jewish Philosophy and Halacha, and he is invited to speak at rabbinical conferences.
Rabbi Kimche and his wife Via made Aliyah in April 2019 and are now living in Yerushalayim.
